Some people asked me about em so these are my 'Nam competition entries.

Its about a Japenese Poet, Matsuo Basho who went wandering around Northern Japan.
Its 'aight.. I suppose, theres a couple of panels I like. But I ended up rushing this because my other project didn't finish until about a week before the competition deadline. Oh well - I did it, I learnt something, Ill move on.

And the better I get at real faces (which I end up drawing more then anything else despite best intentions..), the more I like drawing weird faces. I just have to quit before I end up being some kind of hideous caricature artist on a road somewhere.

So if any of yoo guys like TF2, you may have heard of the war that just went on between Demomen and Soldiers, vying for a fabled new weapon. This picture was for the Propoganda competition, and guess what- I didn't win! It's all fun to do these things though. My poster was based on this glorious piece of ridiculousness.

This was just a sketch before bed- inspiration was a Fever Ray gig ticket on my desk. After seeing how amazing she is live, Trying to listen to the Knife again just seems too...pop-py or something. Go see her if you ever get the chance!

Also - let me know what the colour/darkness is like. On my main monitor its good, but on my second monitor it looks reaaly dark and desaturated. i trust my main moniter the most tho...

I don't know what Andy's been wasting his time with, but me and Faye have embarked upon the best culinary collaboration the world has ever SEEN.

Here was the situation: Faye's friend Connor was due a surprise party, and there we were with a cake, our baking skills and painting talents. Three tones of buttercream, some bourneville chocolate and all kinds of awesome later we made THIS:

FACECAKE. I hadn't even met the guy and by the time we'd finished this I felt like we were related. WE HAD A BOND.

Needless to say, everyone was suitably impressed (including Janine, who started with false praise until she saw it the right way round). Connor was a lot less chocolatey in real life, but arguably as charming. It's inspired me to level up my cakes (maybe even add a third dimension to my decoration), and I think inspired Faye to learn how to cook. Maybe.

As an added bonus, we also got to eat a whole load of leftover buttercream for the next few days! MMMM, SICKLY!

Bryan Lee O'Malley's blog may not be as resource heavy as someone like Brandon Graham's, but it has a few gems. Both O'Malley and his partner Hope Larson's comics are well worth reading, especially since they both look at comics from different angles, but still get satisfying reads out of either.

If you don't like Bryan Lee O'Malley then you're no friend of mine!

I did some tests with this whole custom brushes, using all kind of this and that.
And im kind of night finding its me. I think that something more akin to traditional painting is where i need to be.
so.. my next attempt
Its gonna be all wet, lots of shiny. Drips from the roof onto big robot, and wet hair for everyone.
But well see. My opening sketch had a much darker/moody rain feeling going on.

And wow. I need to sort out my colour configuration or something. Theres a difference between Painter IX (which it was done in) and Photoshop. Then when its put onto the internet, and i see it on a different moniter :S cant imagine how you guys see it.

Well. Yeah.
I know what i what i want to do. But im definitly still finding out how i want to go about doing it, in terms of process. I feel like im messing about too much and doing alot of things that arent needed in the process of painting. I watched a David Levy video and was looking at some other good digital painters, and i like they way they seem to be getting it down first time, no messing.
Im layering up too much and im loosing something. i think i had something at the beginning within the simplicity and lost it. With this in mind, now knowing what im doing - im gonna start again, trying to be simple.
Still dont know whether i like to do drawings to start with either....

also. Faye foreground, marcel on the left, me being heroic at the back. Its gonna be in the sewers too, all cyberpunky grimey. The water theme i lost alot in the process too :(

I've been happily working on that pchat doodle the past few days, playing with the concept, trying to see how well I could work up a finish and... Saving a jpeg for a CA critique thread I LOST THE LARGE FILE. I don't know if I'll work on it any more, but this is how it looks now. All 600px width of it.

I also made a book. PLEASE crit the hell out of it, I'd like to figure out whats wrong with it besides the unavoidable fact that its 'cute'. It might be unintelligible, its getting lukewarm reviews. So if you can figure out how to improve it I'll be happy, it'd be nice to have something small and dinky worth selling at babahogs.

Second 1 was a swap - we did a pretty rough sketch each, then cleaned/painted the others.
Left was drawn by Faye, altered and painted by me (Improved tenfold because of slimes). The other was visa versa.

Exhibition Junk

Got a last minute invite to be in an exhibition in Bristol, and after a 4 days of callus inducing fun, I made these lino cuts and two of the three box things.

I generally have story ideas for most pieces I do, but a good one might brew out of these prints... The top bird was based on a roadrunner and the bottom on a sparrow.
The paper sculptures are all 4 inches square, and painfully awkward to cut. Writing with a tiny brush on a tinier piece of paper which bleeds if you linger too long was... interesting. The general theme for these were 1930's style collector's cards of circus acts, inspired by old cigarette cards.

Had a few more pieces in the exhibiton, and some life drawing that were cherry picked from the past years pieces. It was terribly advertised, but fun to be in! Wanted to photograph em there, but ideas can't beat dead cameras.

[wrong]If I have time before packing for Green Man festival I'll post up a couple vinyl toys I've customised and the odd sketch![/wrong]

Holding the muse hostage

I wanted to finish something before I put up even a sketch dump and here it is; A comic page which would preface a longer story. I know these characters pretty well and I wanted to play with them for a page or two before settling down to something more serious.. possibly even realistic. (Also I know its a bad habit, but I've been writing these characters for a long time and the pages I make now simply assume you know the characters.. heres a few from a year or two ago if you're interested. And slightly mentally handicapped. 1,2,3,4 aaaand so on.)

Character designs:

I was pretty down for a while in what I was working on; mainly because of the complete failure of my 'self portrait'. On the left is the colour rough I worked up while painting and to the right.. the sheer awfulness of what I've ended up with. If I can bear to look at it again, i might take a huge brush to it and really mess it up.

Now for some happier things! I've been doing one Zodiac-based doodle per day, here's Taraus and Gemini:

Wellity wellity wellity... im nearly done?
this has been a success. I am reasonably happy with it for a start, and i managed to take it to a level above what i thought i might be able to achieve (which is funny because in a way i know i can do better still, but it did surprise me with how well it worked)
Turns out this year has had a MUCH larger effect on me that i thought. When im painting, i think of all the main important things unconciously, which is good. I use photoshop and painter so much more efficiently, and all those brush tricks and shit are actually starting to be useful. and I managed to keep my interest in this for longer than i thought too. Maybe 10-20 hours?

If u guys can pick anything u think needs changing - maybe some colour/lighting issues i cant see etc, id appreciate it. IF i can change it, thats even better.

Crit me hard. This is like my exam piece or something, im seeing what my 'bar' is set at.

edit - its a book cover. Hence the composition. The spine goes straight down the middle on that post thing. and space above/below characters is for title and author. Most of back is covered with text too.

Religion vs Science

Continuing my quest to learn perspective/backgrounds/robots/stuff that isn't people I pieced this together on a lightbox from a couple of separate doodles.

I can only take fairly low light level pictures rather then scan anything so the line-art is a bit of a shambles by the time it gets to you on account of being photoshopped from this:

As you can see, I started lining in brown watercolour pencil (for some god-forsaken reason?) before finishing in pen. This renders it.. impossible to paint as its too small for oils and the picture quality isn't great for digital. But we'll see!

Real paintings coming soon hopefully :D

P.s. Yes.. those are monks of some sort. Evil monks perhaps.

Nothing complete to show you today, oil paintings take me a while and I've been starting a lot more then I finish (Thats what she said..) I'm working on a pretty nice mural around the corner from where I live but the problem is I can only work on it between say 2am and 6am to avoid them police and I'm always sleepy when the time comes around. Soon though!

I'm also whoring myself out to the general public doing pencil portraits from photographs (the horror...), if they want them in this TIME OF ECONOMIC DECLINE I hear so much about.

Anyway heres a shoddily photographed page from my sketchbook. Turns out good photographs can only be taken on blisteringly sunny days of which there is a surprisingly unsurprising lack.

So, my scanner/printer isnt with me. Which means no sketches of soldiers running around, of which i have alot(too much Neotokyo!).
AND i have to do my sketches straight onto my pc. So i bust my balls on this for the last 2 hours, but its going well, but i need sleep, its 2am. Expect colour soon.

Alright I got a HUGE amount of help on this one in that it was pointed out to me that colouring in the foreground orange-red made the picture make sense. I'd like to play about with the colours more, fix some of the lighting and make it a little more consistent but this is only the first of three and the deadline is in 2 days. Also this is Andy's computer.

I'd have liked to submit this as a series of three but the danger is the disorganised pair may actually do some drawing and get here ahead of me.

This is my first finished possibly entry to the 4 inch project, in which all submitted pieces must be four inches square. My scanner isn't great so the details have gotton a little mashed... If its too horrific for your eyes to see all those malignly cut edges I suggest you point me to a better scanning unit.
